My Thoughts on Audio Storytelling

In both you tube clips of Touch of Evil Opening music is played as the couple walks through the street. Although in the restored version the audio does not have as big of a part as the no-restored version. In the restored version the music is softer and in the no-restored one it is loud and you can tell of it’s presence. Also in the restored version the street sound is louder and in the no-restored version it blends into the music. The sounds these scenes make drive the stories by building up to the explosion. I think it is good music for an event like this one when the viewer knows what is going to happen but the characters do not. It makes the mood suspenseful because you know what is going to happen as well and the same music is played even when the two characters walk past the car with the bomb in it multiple times.

In The Ambience of Film Noir I thought it was interesting how sound has evolved in films since the 1930’s. I like how Hollywood studios learned to put background sound into their films and that that added effect to the film. These sounds can drive stories in a way that the sound made, like a whistle from a traffic controller, can make the situation clearer of what is actually happening in the scene. This also helps because the background sound can create atmosphere and a setting of the scene so the viewer can get a better understanding of where it is taking place.

I really enjoyed the live tweet along on ds106 radio. The sound effects of the twist off from the killers made listening to the story interesting. The music in this story is also something I enjoyed. It would play suspenseful music during the breaks that would keep you entertained. The spin off from the lunar landing was also very neat. I liked how I could imagine these two astronauts talking as they are about to die. I got into this story and I almost believed that is what actually happened up there.

I like is paragraph in The Ambience of Film Noir about background sound

Noir Likes the 1950’s

I decided to watch Killers Kiss and He Walked by Night for my two film climatology reviews. Both of these films had great examples of what I learned about photography and scene catching. Two examples are below of still captures that really attracted me to the  screen.

This shot of Killers Kiss is interesting because it has you focused on many things at once

This picture from Killers Kiss is noir because of the whole scandalous and unclear motives of the two men. The one going to talk to Gloria is obviously up to something and you have to wonder what the one smoking the cigarette is thinking. I like the the watch your step sign because it is ironic in the way that the sign is meant so people do not get hurt even though the two men’s plan is to kill Davey.

A shot from He Walked by Night

This still capture is a good example of noir due to the gun and the poorly lighten atmosphere. I think if this was a still picture this would intrigue me because of the dark sense and that there is a gun pointed somewhere on the screen.

My Thoughts on the Visuals of Storytelling

I never used to be very interested in picture taking as a child. I would never ask for a phone with a camera on it or any pictures, or did I care pictures people would show me. It was not until about my sophomore year of high school when I became interested in photography. This is because when I played baseball my hitting coach would take frame by frame pictures of my swing. This would help me with my game so that is when I decided to invest in a camera phone.

My experience with my swing pictures turned into me being active in the photography world. I started using my camera phone to take pictures of a lot of stuff (mostly goofy pictures). I would take pictures of my friends posing weird, funny signs I saw, Ironic situations, and myself making weird faces. My approach to taking these photos would be for the people I was taking the picture of to not see it or not be expecting me to take the picture. This approach was used to capture the humor and surprise in a picture. I would say I have been pretty successful at it because I have a lot of friends who are not too happy that I captured them in a certain picture.

After I reviewed the elements on the noir106 website I would say that the most useful thing I could do to improve my pictures would be to find something that stands out in the picture that makes them keep looking at it. Like Jason Eskenazi said there is a picture that has a lady with a band-aid on and it gets you thinking about the band-aid. Without me even seeing the picture I was wondering about all the  possibilities as of why the  band-aid was on the finger. It could have been burnt, cut, blistered, severed, etc.. That idea got me thinking that in my pictures I need to find something that gets people to stop and look longer at my photo.

Week Summary

This week I read some noir which included The Postman Always Rings Twice, The Killers, The Shadow, Dopamine Agonistes. These readings were all very interesting. Interesting enough that I did not care how long they took to read. I thought I would be pissed off the entire I was reading but the entire time I didn’t want to look away from the screen because they were such well written stories

I also created a character this week that is a detective who is addicted to alcohol and cigarettes. I also used him for a story that he was rude to some kids him. I looked forward to using Ol Mick later in the semester.

I was introduced into the writing assignments this week. This was very amusing to me because one thing I do not like about school is that I do not get to chose my assignments. I liked how there were a lot of options that I could do and one that I thought would be interesting to write about. The website that taught me how to do these writing assignments was very helpful as well.

I like the daily creates for the same reason I liked the writing assignment. That I could chose what day I wanted to do if I did not feel like doing the one for that day. These also went quick and really opened up my mind for creative thoughts.

Customizing my blog was an eyeopener and introduced me to a lot of new features of word press. After completing this step I felt a lot more confident working in word press. I saw that there are a bunch of more themes I can do and I will definitely be changing up my blog from time to time. And now anybody can learn who I am when they visit my about page. Downloading the plugins were kind of a challenge but I figured it out, and I will be quick on moderating comments now that I know how to do it. I also have changed my blog title to The Mind of Cuyler Matteson because everyone wants to get to know me LOL.

In conclusion I commented on some peoples blogs and used twitter some this week. I posted some examples of me participating and will continue for the rest of the semester.

The Unusual Superhero- 2 points

The Pooper Scooper

This super hero has the power to control everyone’s poop so he can make any villain poop on command. He helps fight crime for instance if there was a hostage situation, the Pooper Scooper will run in and make the villains defecate in their pants. This of course altering their ability to keep keeping hostages so that is when swat takes over.

The Pooper Scooper was given these powers because he was born in Toiletville, Nebraska. A town that is underground and only people with Pooper Scoopers powers can live. Pooper Scooper was brought up to the earth when a sewer system blew up on top of his house. It killed his entire family but he was stuck on the face of the earth and now he fights crime.

Renegade Teacher- 3 points (my character Ol Mick)

Mick- Ok kids. Let’s hurry this up so I can get the bar. I am gonna teach all you’s about crime.

Junior- Ol Mick, are you ok?

Mick- Yesh? Why do ask that question you?

Junior- You just are wobbling around and you smell really bad.

(Mick falls asleep for 20 minutes while the kids stare at him wondering if he is dead. He awakes suddenly and starts speaking again.)

Mick- (Short Pause) Ok kids, I am now going to teach you about a great medicine called alcohol. Now what alcohol does is make ever boring part of life fun. Like me coming in here and teaching you kids. This is fun to me?

Gabe- My dad says alcohol turns decent guys into complete assholes.

Mick- Well your dads an asshole next question.

John- What is alcohol?

Mick- It is a magically fluid that tastes bad but when you get enough into your system you feel all loose like.

(The principal walks in and Mick does not see him)

Mick- It makes all the bad days into good days, it makes you forget your shitty life. It makes unattractive things look…

Principal- Ol Mick that is enough!

Mick- Welp Shit

Alternate Ending to The Shadow- 3 points

Shadow- Everything, Dr. Evans. Your escape from Devil’s Island after Dubrill’s betrayal of Martan, that resulted in hundred lashes. His resolve for vengeance. From the authorities of Devil’s Island, I learned the truth about Corvet’s … last escape.

Evans- Yes? Yes, I see now why he hated us. But what about Corvet?

Shadow- I knew he would not strike here tonight.

Evans- What? How did you know this? Why did you not tell us?

Shadow- I knew of Martan’s plan and I needed to let it turn out the way it did. To protect you.

Evans- Why are you protecting me?

Shadow- There’s no time to talk about that. You need to go.

Evans- Why?

Shadow- Corvet is on his way here. I do not know how he knows of your presence here, but his is certainly here to kill you.

Evans- Ok, I will leave now!

Corvet- EVANS!!!!

Evans- Oh no, it’s too late. Shadow, what do I do?

Corvet- There you are. Now I finally get to kill you.

Evans- Shadow please help!

Corvet- You fool, I bet you are wondering how I got here. Well let’s just say I have a special friend who told me where you three would be.

Evans- Shadow?

Corvet- Well yes…. Hahah I am Shadow.

Evans- But how? But why? There’s no way.

Corvet- Luckily those two other idiots are already dead. Now it’s time for you to die.

Shadow- Goodbye Evans

BANG, BANG

My Character Dossier- Micheal Bretton

Micheal Bretton, A 40 year old detective who will not stop at anything to take down the bad guy who live in Atlanta. That is unless he is too drunk. After his wife left him he started to pick up heavy drinking and smoking. Ol Mick (nickname) see’s his drinking and smoking as not a problem but a phase he is going through to help him get over his wife. She left with his one boy and never lets him see the kid. Mick’s wife left him because she thought he cared more about work then he did her. Which was almost true but now Mick is happiest when he is working and helping make Atlanta a safer place.

Ol Mick is Balding so he always wears a hat. Does not like to wear anything but a bland suit. Wears dark big framed glasses. Although his drinking is a problem he always seems to bring in the bad guys.

His favorite food is Lasagna, his favorite drink is Bud Light, blue is his favorite color, He likes to read The Hardy Boys on his free time. His favorite movie is A Few Good Men and he has a crazy obsession with his gun.

As Ol Mick likes to state “Crime never stops. So neither will I.”

Reviews on these Dark Readings

The Postman Always Rings Twice

After reading The Postman Always Rings twice I can’t help but hope I find the right women in my life.  The entire time reading I could not help but think of what Frank could have tried to do instead of murdering the Greek. I say Frank because I caught Cora changing her mind a lot, for example when she decides to go back to Nick Papadakis after the “bathroom slipping” incident (quotes because they were trying to kill Nick by saying he fell but really Cora hit him and there was a power outage). Ever since that moment everything seemed to turn down hill. Frank and Cora finally do murder Nick by faking a car accident and it seems like their relationship is strongly affected by this encounter. It is of course with all the court procedures, then Coras death, then Frank being convicted for killing Cora.

Over all this is a very dark work of literature. I think this dark tone is first set when Nick leaves then all of a sudden Frank is biting Cora’s lip. The entire time they never seem to talk about a happy future, just that Cora does not want Frank to work some bland job and Frank wants to make sure Cora never has to go back to the hash house of which she left quickly once she found the Greek.

This story is noir because of the evil characters that are Nick and Cora. Cora would literally kill her husband just to be with Nick and make Nick kill the Greek. That would take some dark minds to think of that plan.

The Shadow, script for the Death Triangle episode

This was a very interesting read. With the constant organ playing and laughing it seemed like a soap opera. Definitely a mystery because the entire time the reader is trying to figure out who this Corvet guy is.

I liked this story because of the plot twist that comes in the end. The plot has the reader thinking that Corvet has shown up at the house and they will all die starting with Dubrille because he is the one by himself. Then it turns out it was Martan in a wig pretending to be Corvet, because he wanted to kill Dubrille (for ratting him out on Devils Island) and Evans (because he has success).

The reader waits the entire book just to find out that Corvet is dead. Which was a good ending a closure for wanting to find out where Corvet was and how he was going to show up.

On another note Shadow was a good add to the story to basically explain to the characters and audience what was going on.

This narration is noir because of the mystery it brings to the readers mind.

The Killers, Ernest Hemingway

I would define the writing style of this story as suspenseful. The entire time I was reading I was wondering when Ole Anderson was going to walk in and get shot up. I also felt that Al and Max were about to shoot George, Nick, or the cook because they knew too much.

Towards the end of the story when Nick is Talking to Ole Anderson is when the story turns sad. Hemingway describes this old beaten down man who knows he does not have long to live. Then this man influences Nick so much that Nick decides to move out of the town because he cannot handle it.

This story is noir because of the murder talks that are going on. Also the whole time I was reading I was in suspense because at any time Al or Max could have killed anyone and to me it seemed like that was going to happen.

Dopamine Agonistes

This is a noir story based on the fact of the amount of problems the women in the casino has. She had sex with a complete stranger just for some more money to gamble and left her kid in a locked car.

On the other hand Lorne is not a perfect soul when he cheats on his wife and betrays his family. I do think he had better intentions than the lady by bringing the kid to get food and take care of necessities but he did get a little carried away.
